EIGHT UNDOCUMENTED FOREIGN NATIONALS DETAINED IN SOUTH COAST CRACKDOWN

A large-scale multidisciplinary law enforcement operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and eThekwini Municipality swept through Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas today, 10 June, resulting in the detention of eight undocumented foreign nationals and a series of business compliance inspections.

The joint operation, called Operation Gijima, targeted crime hotspots, bylaw violations and business compliance across the South Coast as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement, combat criminal activity and ensure adherence to Municipal regulations.

Led by Overall Commander Brigadier Nkabinde and Operational Commander Lieutenant Colonel Vezi, the operation brought together a wide range of law enforcement and Municipal stakeholders.

Participating agencies included crime intelligence, Metro Police and specialised SAPS units from various stations, working alongside eThekwini Municipality directorates.

Operational teams conducted extensive inspections of businesses and monitored known crime hotspots throughout the Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas precincts.

Particular attention was given to foreign-owned tuckshops, where compliance inspections focused on business licensing requirements, public health standards, utility connections and adherence to Municipal by-laws.

During the coordinated operation, immigration authorities detained eight foreign nationals who were unable to provide documentation confirming their legal status in the country.

The individuals remain in custody pending the completion of the relevant legal and immigration processes.

Authorities said the operation forms part of a broader strategy to address criminal activity, illegal business practices and regulatory non-compliance in identified hotspot areas.

Similar multidisciplinary operations will continue across the South Coast and other parts of the Municipality.

SAPS and eThekwini Municipality leadership commended the professionalism and cooperation displayed by all participating units and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public order, supporting lawful business activity and enhancing community safety.
